In the preface, Roger Coenen points out that "this bibliography breaks new ground in the study of the relationship between photography and literature and will enjoy broad appreciation among researchers, photohistorians, critics, literary scholars, semiologists, and iconographic experts." Although the bibliography is no doubt unique, it may have limited value to libraries that support little formal study of the relationshp beween literature and photography. The work lists more than 3,000 titles in nearly 20 languages books, exhibition catalogs, dissertations, and special issues of magazines. Included are: (1) books with texts in prose or verse by writers mentioned by name, and with photographs by named photographers; (2) books dealing with photographic work produced by writers; (3) anthologies of writings on photography; (4) books exploring the relationship between photography and literature; (5) books on major art movements which study the relationship between photography and literature; (6) books containing portraits of writers made by credited photographers; and (7) books containing photographs of "places memorable in literature." Magazine articles, photo/pictorial biographies, fiction featuring photographers or photography, and biblical texts are excluded. The work is arranged alphabetically by name, with a subject index. The latter is of limited value because no subdivisions are used; e.g., more than 100 pages of references occur under "portraits," with no subdivisions. Recommended for specialized photography collections and upper-division or graduate university collections. R. L. Wick; University of Colorado at Denver
