Diatoms are microscopic algae that are abundant in almost all aquatic habitats; there are probably more than 100,000 existing species. They possess silicaceous cell walls that are often well preserved in fossil deposits. The species can be distinguished by variations in the structure of their cell walls. This collaboration by 38 experts focuses on the various uses of diatoms rather than on their biology or taxonomy. The composition of species will change in response to variations in hydrology, climate, acidification, and eutrophication. Consequently, they are useful indicators of past and present environmental conditions. The volume presents comprehensive coverage of such uses. It will be of value to advanced students and professionals in a wide variety of biological and earth sciences. Graduate students; researchers and faculty; professionals and practitioners. J. C. Briggs; University of Georgia
