Notes: | Atlas has subtitle: Maps, charts and diagrams to illustrate the Report ... After the loss of the S.S. "Titanic," in April, 1912, the British Board of trade called a special conference to consider the establishment of ice patrol or ice observation vessels to the north of steamship routes across the Atlantic. The report of the conference, Dec. 20, 1912, recommended this expedition, and the Board of trade took immediate steps to carry it into effect. Arrangements were made for the cost to be shared equally between the government and the shipowners concerned. The "Scotia" was commanded by Capt. T. Robertson, her former captain in Bruce's Antarctic expedition. cf. Nature, Jan. 1915, p. 535. Bibliography: p. 47. committed to retain 20170930 20421213 HathiTrust |
