Accompanying the first exhibition at the Morgan Library in New York devoted solely to 20th-century drawings, this catalog highlights works on paper from 73 private collections in New York City. Documenting 140 European and American drawings dating from 1900 to 1950, the catalog section includes comprehensive entries on international stars such as Czanne, Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky, and Paul Klee as well as young New Yorkers such as Jackson Pollack and Mark Rothko. Works were chosen for their ability to portray the artist as draftsman. In the main essay, "The Modern Drawing," Flam thoughtfully discusses the art of drawing as reflecting modern pictorial techniques and conventions developed in 20th-century art styles such as Cubism and Abstraction. Illustrated throughout with large color reproductions, this volume is recommended for art libraries and academic libraries supporting strong art history programs.ÄSandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll., MA (c) Copyright 2010.
