German's book is a welcome addition to the long list of book chapters and monograms on this established, yet fascinating manufacturing process: powder metallurgy (PM). The striking feature of this book is its comprehensiveness. Starting with production of metals, iron and steel, then covering every facet of PM, the book leads right up to the prevailing and possible market of the products. In this way, it is as appropriate to the marketing and manufacturing staff as to it is the students who will study PM as a special subject. Some empirical data and figures appear here for the first time. The book is very well planned and executed; the idea of an "Equation box"--separating numerical relations from the stream of qualitative exposition--is worth emulating in books on many other subjects. Though specifics on nonferrous metals and composites are missed, the principles dealt with are quite applicable to those as well. Enthusiastically recommended as a leading work in PM technology.
