Loue (Case Western Reserve Univ.) offers a thoroughly researched and well-organized book to complement other recent publications focused on varying ethnic and cultural groups in our society, and makes a significant contribution to the understanding of variations in research of health care needs of the groups. The first part of three provides background information to enable readers to understand issues related to research of various ethnic and cultural groups including ethical principles in research, research design, race and ethnicity, sex, gender and orientation, and health care utilization and access. The five chapters in part 2 discuss health concerns of African Americans, Asian and Pacific Islanders (including Chinese and Japanese), Hispanics, Native Americans, women, and needs specific to sexual orientation. The two chapters in part 3 provide case studies dealing with HIV and diabetes mellitus. Each chapter is documented with extensive bibliographies containing relevant, recent, and some classic references. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter to assist the learner in utilizing principles discussed in problem solving. Appropriate for all health professionals.
