In this manual, chemical analysis of soils is used to establish nutrient status for the growth of crops. The interpretation of test results determines the amounts of fertilizer or soil conditioners to be added to soils, and can be the basis for making decisions about the use of agricultural land. This book has peer-reviewed chapters by 37 expert authors and is the first practical guide to soil tests appropriate for Australian conditions, but it will also be valuable to soil scientists in other parts of the world. An overview of the general principles of soil sampling and testing and the interpretation of results is followed by a description of major agricultural soils illustrated with 20 color plates. Other topics covered are acidity, salinity, cation exchange capacity, soil organic matter, and fertility of soils as related to physical indicators. There is detailed discussion of soil tests for 14 different nutrient elements. The final chapter shows how test results should be interpreted to decide how much fertilizer to use. Well illustrated with figures and tables; detailed reference lists; glossary. For all agricultural library collections. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. P. M.
