| Summary: | One of Nelson Mandela's first acts as president of South Africa was to create the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a panel formed to provide public accounting for the crimes of apartheid and to help purge the injustices of the past. This study looks at moral and political issues that shaped the Truth Commission, at the effect of the commission's hearings on the fragile democracy, and at the often horrifying information the commission hearings unearthed about the nature and structure of apartheid.
