This is an excellent book written by a mathematics education researcher who also taught high school algebra to lower-track students. Based on the analysis of his own teaching and current research in mathematics education, Chazan (Michigan State Univ.) provides an insightful discussion of dilemmas of teaching high school algebra. Throughout the book, Chazan attempts to answer a challenging question: Why should algebra be taught, especially to those who do not see its use? In doing so, he thoughtfully discusses the potential of a function-based algebra to motivate students toward its learning. He successfully argues that shifting algebra teaching from a traditional to a function-based approach enhances students' conceptual understanding. His illustrations are both theory- and practice-based and can be implemented in classrooms. This book is a rich resource for those involved in teaching and researching algebra, particularly at the high school level. Recommended to all high school algebra teachers and mathematics educators involved in algebra research, and as a reference for university and college libraries. H. P.
