Drinking alcoholic beverages is one of the most diverse of human behaviors in terms of who drinks and who does not, when and where they do it, what and how they consume, why they do it and what they think about it, and the individual and group consequences of their consumption. A book on the subject risks being merely a "collection of curiosities," but Heath (Brown Univ.), the world's leading anthropologist of alcohol, has skillfully organized an otherwise bewildering array of facts and information into a logical framework that enhances understanding. The author complements this with his own insightful generalizations and conclusions. This well-written volume is useful to the general reader, and its extensive references make it valuable to the specialist as well. Highly recommended for all college and university libraries. D. J.
