Most publications on rock art concentrate on the western US; Diaz-Granados has undertaken an exemplary correction of this oversight with an excellent account on Missouri. Her book begins with the needed background, progressing through methodology, analysis, and interpretation, all tied together in the conclusion. Readers will gain an understanding of the importance of the environment, the cultures, and the choice of geographic locations for the placement of these icons produced by the First Americans. The 12 years spent in the field to obtain this record are evident in the quality of the writing and attention to detail. The professional approach is reflected in the chapter on interpretation--the most challenging and controversial aspect of the study of rock art. The author relies heavily on expert source material and acknowledges the difficulties faced. Her conclusion clearly indicates that there can be no definitive answer. One caveat: the chalking of rock art has been condemned by researchers worldwide. Although Diaz-Granados states that this is unacceptable, she relies on earlier researchers who used chalk and she includes illustrations depicting chalked designs. This reviewer is concerned that casual readers may use the technique to enhance photography, unaware that they are damaging both the petroglyphs and the site soil. Highly recommended for academic and professional collections. F. G. Bock; emeritus, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
