Editors Kushlan and Hafner offer a highly informative and thoroughly documented book that summarizes the most current knowledge of the world's herons. Written as a sequel to their Herons Handbook (CH, Apr'85), Heron Conservation focuses on conservation issues that have become pertinent over the past 16 years. The first half of the book discusses the status and conservation needs of herons by geographical region, and the last half discusses specific conservation efforts that must be undertaken to ensure a sustainable future for herons. The only information that failed to be updated was the nomenclature. Indeed, Kushlan and Hafner admittedly use the same nomenclature found in Herons Handbook. But by preserving consistency, the book no longer reflects current taxonomic status of some species. Nevertheless, this new book will serve as an indispensable reference for biologists involved with regional, national, and international conservation efforts of herons.
