During the last decade, geologists have been (and still continue to be) incredibly involved in illuminating and updating research about the ever-changing geology of central and northern California. This region is unmatched in fullness of geologic record, variety, and exposure. As such, this second edition of Roadside Geology is especially interesting, borders on exciting, and will truly be valuable for geologists and non-geologists alike. The illustrations are absolutely spectacular. The photographs, maps, and sections are truly exemplary in illustrating all aspects of geology. Major chapters include an introduction to the geologic framework and history of the state, and thorough information pertaining to the geology of the Sierra Nevada, the Klamath Mountains, the Coast Range, the Great Valley, the High Cascades on the Modoc Plateau, and the Basin and Range. A highly selective reference list and a glossary are valuable additions to this work. The network of modern highways in California provides remarkable access to the fascinating geologic story that this book utilizes with great skill and advantage. This text will be handy to all highway travelers in California. Summing Up: Recommended. --Thomas L. T. Grose, Colorado School of Mines
