Spanning the years from 1932 to 1988, Tracy presents a chronicle in photographs of the 37 set designs Isamu Noguchi created for the dances of Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, George Balanchine, and others. The powerful images by 19 notable photographers--including Barbara Morgan and Philippe Halsman--freeze dancers in moments of dramatic interaction with Noguchi's environments. Interspersed with these black-and-white photographs are program notes, interviews with Noguchi, and Tracy's own commentary. This visual documentary would be an excellent addition to libraries with interests in dance, theater, or photography; unfortunately it lacks scholarly apparatus. R. A.
