Heightened concern for the US coastal environment, particularly along the Gulf of Mexico, has made coastal engineering and coastal resources management increasingly important fields of study. This new volume by Bush (geology, State Univ. of West Georgia) in the "Living with the Shore Series" from Duke University Press is part of a 21-volume set funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (cf. Peter C. Patton and James M. Kent, A Moveable Shore, CH, Oct'92; David M. Bush et al., Living with the Puerto Rico Shore, CH, Feb'96; Paul D. Komar, The Pacific Northwest Coast, CH, Mar'99). The language of the book is straightforward and provides numerous examples to illustrate key concepts. Numerous black-and-white photographs, maps, and graphs supplement the text. The index is complete, and the appendixes provide good contact information, useful references, and additional resources. Though this book is not intended as a textbook, it contains a wealth of material for supplementary reading in graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses concerned with coastal resources. Also useful to faculty, researchers, and professionals. W. Weston University of New Orleans
