In this volume Duane (North Central College) provides insights into human resource systems spanning several areas of the world: the US and Canada, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, and the Middle East. Although the book does not include such regions as Asia Pacific, Africa, and South America, and thus falls short of being truly comprehensive, it does a good job of profiling how human resource policies and priorities vary in several key geographic areas. The first chapter discusses how and why the traditional form of expatriate assignments has failed and outlines the book's organization. Chapter two provides an overview of the economic/labor market context in the specific global regions. Chapters 3 through 6 discuss the various functions (acquiring, developing, rewarding, and protecting human resources) involved in managing employee resources; while chapter 7 focuses on maintaining labor relations. The final chapter presents conclusions and limitations of the book. Includes an appendix on relevant Internet resources. This is a well-written guide to global human resource policies and priorities, which corporate decision makers, researchers, and students alike will find interesting and useful. T.
