Peterson, an internationally recognized figure in the clay world and an outstanding ceramic educator, has written this intriguing work that attempts to give a "complete picture" of the latest developments in ceramic art. The result of her most recent travels and study of the clay scene throughout the world, this study is a survey of the dramatic changes that have taken place in those countries in clay as an expressive medium. Nine short essay chapters discuss specific themes, i.e., "Materials Speak"; "Expression through Fire"; "Colour Versus Monochrome." An introduction serves as a preview to the more than 260 clay artists, all represented with full-color illustrations along with brief statements and short biographies of the artists. Peterson states that "Unlike their predecessors at the mid-century who were fired with passion and produced a 'style,' today's clayworkers immerse themselves in all the directions that have gone before...." She concludes that "as we move ahead into the twenty-first century it seems less likely that we will see another forward leap in ceramic innovation...." Regrettably, no bibliography or index included. All levels. A. C. Garzio emeritus, Kansas State University
