In this splendid short treatise, Guattari (1930-92; radical psychoanalyst, social theorist, and activist) revolutionizes critical theory by combining trenchant theoretical Marxism with a political activism aimed at reclaiming the earth, and ourselves, from the clutches of IWC (integrated world capitalism). Like his other collaborative work with Gilles Deleuze, The Three Ecologies (1989) profoundly challenges the political complacencies that militate against social and personal transformation. This book is an important contribution to the growing body of translations of Guattari, and it appears with a fine essay by Gary Genosko, "The Life and Work of Felix Guattari." A bibliography, chronology, and translator's introduction also accompany the work. This volume reveals a crucial dimension of Guattari's political thinking, and it documents one of his most recent interventions in contemporary social problems. It will be an important book for scholars and students of European politics, social theory, and French intellectualism. Upper-division undergraduate students through faculty and researchers. M.
