This ambitious anthology offers 16 articles on elderly Chinese living in Asia and North America. The 28 contributors include academics, physicians, and specialists in gerontology, social work, nursing, and behavioral sciences in Asia and North America. There are six articles on Hong Kong, one each on the USA and Taiwan, three on Canada, four on China, and one comparative study of Canada and Hong Kong. Topics include social support and integration, long-term and community care, family support, quality of life, practice of filial piety, living arrangements, public housing, care utilization, and the long-term implication of China's one-child policy. The findings show that elderly Chinese continue to benefit from a social system that demands filial piety. However, there are also indications that family members are confronted more than ever by the economic reality of elderly care. Acculturation in North America has begun to reduce the stigma of deferring elderly care to the state as an entitlement issue. Full of charts, graphs, and statistics. Suitable for upper-division and graduate students. H. T. Wong emeritus, Eastern Washington University
