As the most significant producer of oil in the world, the Persian Gulf region has undergone major transformations in its economic and sociopolitical structures in recent years. Although many Gulf countries have received ample coverage in the press and popular media, there is a dearth of reliable and scholarly information about the history, culture, geography, society, and political developments in the region. In this timely and comprehensive volume, the editors have put together an interesting and informative collection of articles on various aspects of life that bear on the security of the Persian Gulf. Among issues covered are the history and ethnic diversity of the region, the new generation in Iran and Saudi Arabia, intra- and inter-regional relations and emerging security issues, and the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United Arab Emirates over three disputed islands in the northern Persian Gulf. Most of the contributors are from the region and thus provide unique perspectives on the topics they cover. In many ways, this volume complements the editors' earlier The Persian Gulf at the Millennium: Essays in Politics, Economy, Security, and Religion (1997). Highly recommended for upper-division undergraduates through faculty. N. Entessar Spring Hill College
