Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Reminiscent of Julio Cort zar's Hopscotch (Rayuela, Alfaguara, 1992. reprint), this collection of 11 short stories set in the Roma section of Mexico City is peopled with women protagonists in search of love and meaning in their lives. Graf, the author of La Libreta Morada (The Purple Notebook, Artefacto Editor, NA), reveals in an "Advertencia" ("Advice") section that there are connections among the stories and suggests reading them in the order she indicates. In poetic and extremely descriptive language, Graf combines elements of popular culture (lyrics to popular songs and summaries of film plots) with the best techniques of classic literature, as when she parallels her story "Qu? demonio pudo asi burlarte" ("How the Hell Could I Fool You Like That") with Shakespeare's Hamlet. The fact that the stories take place in the middle of Mexico City does not limit the readership. Highly recommended for both public and academic libraries; we will be paying attention to this young author for a long time.
