Black's, an encyclopedic dictionary compiled in the UK, concentrates on the health, welfare, and management of animals. It places strong focus on farm animals but also provides information about companion and exotic animals. It gathers knowledge of diseases, drugs, chemicals, plants, procedures, conditions, and the anatomy and physiology of animals, among other topics. Black's is both an excellent ready reference source and a good place to begin research. This edition includes hundreds of revisions; among the updated topics are foot and mouth disease, bovine spongiform encepalopathy (BSE), TB in cattle, antibiotic use, genetic engineering, and blood transfusions. There are two new sections on laws, acts, and regulations regarding animals and useful addresses. The dictionary lists for many diseases their causes, signs, treatments, prevention, and precautions, and includes a number of pictures and figures. Entries are brief, ranging from a few lines to several pages. Essential for veterinary, animal science, and agriculture collections, and for academic and public libraries, especially in rural areas.
