Stevenson and Fanshawe write about all the resident, migrant, and vagrant birds of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. They discuss 1,388 species, and three experienced artists have prepared 287 plates illustrating all the plumages and major races of birds that could be encountered in this area. An introductory section includes a list of plates and then treats landscapes with nice maps, species seasonality, taxonomy and names, conservation, additional reading, and acknowledgements. The plates are very good and clearly show the difference between species. There is an index of scientific names and one of common names. At the end of the book is a list of important bird areas in East Africa with a map to show where these areas are located. This book is an excellent addition to literature on African birds and is recommended for all libraries. General readers; lower-division undergraduates through professionals. C. J.
