According to the publisher, the third edition, completely revised and updated, adds "superb graphics" to this atlas. The overall subject matter--various aspects of the health effects of tobacco use and the involvement of tobacco companies, looked at worldwide--is covered in six parts, further divided into 32 chapters. Included are a glossary, list of resources, and two extensive data tables presenting tobacco use in every country of the world. Each chapter consists of two pages face-to-face, with a minimum of text, but with maps, numerical tables and graphs, and eye-catching comments and quotations. Written by scientific consultant Shafey (Emory Univ.) and others, and published by the American Cancer Society with help from the World Lung Foundation, this book is authoritative. It is best described as a resource or reference--all the statistics needed by anyone interested in the worldwide antismoking campaign. Most of the sources cited are government reports, not original publications. Some of the comments and quotations appear to be a bit exaggerated; for these one would like to see the confirming data. Despite this one limitation, this is a valuable atlas. It is also available online . Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. R. S.
