Thorne (student counseling, University of East Anglia, UK) has coauthored (with D. Mearns) Person-centred Counselling in Action (1988) and coedited (with W. Dryden) Training and Supervision for Counselling in Action (1991). This book is one of a series on key figures in counseling and psychotherapy; others treat Freud and Berne. Thorne's book contains chapters on Rogers's life, his theoretical and practical contributions, criticisms and rebuttals, and Rogers's overall influence. Thorne's bias is disclosed in his statement ". . .in Chapter 4, I attempt to explore the more telling of these objections and to refute them where possible" (p. vii). A competent, favorably biased review that adds little for readers already familiar with Rogers's life and work; however, new elements consist of reviews of trends and selected, unpublished conference presentations. The book by H.A. Van Belle, Basic Intent and Therapeutic Approach of Carl R. Rogers (1980), is more valuable for the person already familiar with basics about Rogers. W. P.
