Gr 10 Up-Mauroni's authoritative, broad discussion does not delve into the moral and ethical implications of the use of chemical and biological (CB) weapons; his intent is to explain why nations would seek to develop them. The author provides a brief history of their development and discusses some of the more controversial episodes in their history, such as the use of human volunteers and open-air testing and the use of CB weapons in the Persian Gulf War. Also discussed are delivery systems for these weapons, and defense. Several case studies are provided, from the use of gas in World War I to the anthrax scare in 2001. The last part of the book offers a list of the names of organizations for further information and a lengthy list for further research of books, journals, and Internet sites that is valuable for the number of viewpoints it represents. Readers may find the glossary somewhat limited. This book is most suitable for students seeking in-depth information rather than ready-reference answers.-Elizabeth M.
