Burel (director, ECHO, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS) and Baudry (director, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique) have prepared a translation of "Ecologie du Paysage," published in France in 1999. The authors have coauthored peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on landscape ecology with other international experts. They present concepts linking human activity with agricultural landscapes and subsequent environmental consequences. Examples are drawn from various countries in the application of landscape concepts. The book is organized in four parts: part 1, introduction (two chapters): "Definition" and "Landscape Ecology as a Multidiscipline"; part 2, Landscape Structure and Dynamics (three chapters): "Analysis," "Dynamics," and "Organization of Landscapes"; part 3, Ecological Processes (three chapters): "The Functioning of Populations," "Interspecific Relationships and Biodiversity," and "Geochemical Flows"; and the one-chapter part 4, "Applications of Landscape Ecology." Readership includes biologists, ecologists, agronomists, conservationists, land planners, soil scientists, foresters, and landscape architects. Glossary; 28-page bibliography with an international flavor; index organized by major subjects; well-designed illustrations placed where principles/concepts are discussed. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
