A very good introductory text on a very specialized topic, this book devotes ten chapters to a discussion of all aspects of angiosperm embryology. A unique aspect of this volume is its inclusion of many examples that focus on agricultural plants. Lersten (emer., Iowa State Univ., Ames) describes stamens and pollen development, pistil/carpel and embryo sac development, pollen germination, pollen tube growth and fertilization, and endosperm and embryo development. Unfortunately, the book does not include a glossary, which would have been very useful to the reader. Each chapter provides an excellent literature cited section. Figures and photographs aid in explaining topics. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers. K. Fescemyer Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus
