500 | |a Origin: Compiled in England in the late 17th century. The unidentified compiler borrowed a great deal from Elias Ashmole, Institution, laws, and ceremonies of the most noble order of the Garter (London, 1672), made extensive use of the Statutes of the Realm, and cited such printed sources as Peter Heylyn, The historie of ... St. George of Cappadocia ... [and] the institutions of the most noble order of the Garter (2nd edition: London, 1633) and William Camden, Britannia (London, 1586). The compiler also had access to the private registers of the Order of the Garter, including the "Black Book," the "Sky-Blue Book," the "Red Book," the "Liber Carolinis," and drew from the papers and notes of influential persons intimately connected with the Order, including Sir Henry St. George the elder, Sir Edward Walker, and Matthew Wren. The scribe has added marginal notes and corrections to the text, and has crossed out text on page 1. | ||
