Apart from a short introduction, this work is a selective translation of those parts of the Quran that pertain to the prophets referenced in its pages, along with selections from the commentary literature produced by classical exegetes. The accuracy of the translations, their clarity, and their readability are among the many attractive features of this work. Because the translated material is organized according to the names of the prophets, the volume will serve as an easy reference to what the Quran has to say regarding the various prophets and their respective roles in human history. Wheeler (Univ. of Washington, Seattle) provides an adequate overview, in his introduction, of a subject that is clearly central to the Quran. The volume also contains a short section of suggestions for further readings, followed by a selective bibliography and an index. This work represents a welcome addition to the growing body of academic literature on the Quran and the work of the classical exegetes. It will serve the needs of beginning students seeking to find their way in this difficult text, but it will also function as a handy reference work for more seasoned scholars and general readers. Highly recommended to both academic and public libraries. M. Swartz Boston University
