Originally published in 1963, this title has served as the standard guidebook to common plants and animals of the Sierra. This new, updated, and expanded edition offers more than 500 new color photographs, updated scientific names, and new knowledge. An initial section summarizes the physical features, climate, and geological history of the area. The main part of the book consists of descriptions and illustrations of more than 750 species of the most common plants and animals, including fungi, lichens, mosses, ferns, flowering plants, insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals. Information provided will help readers identify the family, genus, etc., of plants not specifically included. The many fine color illustrations are supplemented by black-and-white line drawings. A bibliography lists further recent resources for identifying more plants and animals, and the index is excellent. Naturalist Lukas and the contributors to this edition have provided descriptions of new species and updated the information for previously listed ones. This compact guide, printed on quality paper, will be a welcome addition to the collection of any individual or library interested in the Sierra Nevada. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. All levels. M.
