This is the 14th title in the "Communication, Society and Politics" series published by Columbia University Press. It is a state-of-the-art report consisting of 17 essays written by some of the most eminent scholars in the field of communication science. Part 1 introduces the analytical concepts and methods for studying the effects of modernization and globalization of political communication. Part 2 offers case studies illustrating the potential of cross-national research. Part 3 identifies promising concepts and contemporary challenges associated with cross-national research. The authors/editors (Esser, Univ. of Missouri--Columbia; Pfetsch, Univ. of Hohenheim, Germany) have crafted a coherent anthology that builds on and extends such works as Politics, Media and Modern Democracy, ed. by David L. Swanson and Paolo Mancini (1966) and Pippa Norris, A Virtuous Circle--Political Communication in Postindustrial Society (CH, Sep'01', 39-0604). ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. All academic and research libraries and specialists in the field. E. C. Dreyer emeritus, University of Tulsa
