This new edition of the book by the same title, edited by Diederich and Peter J. Stang (1998), is a compendium of cross-coupling reactions that treats a wide swath of metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions at sp and sp2 hybrid carbons. This compilation, used in conjunction with the first edition, covers the important developments in cross-coupling methodology. De Meijere and Diederich have enlisted experts and leaders in the field and have edited a compelling reference work for upper-level undergraduates through practicing professionals. In addition to updating aspects of the first edition, this monograph describes new mechanistic insights for cross-coupling reactions and presents novel developments that are profoundly changing the art of synthesis. Key synthetic protocols are provided for each chapter, thus making this monograph of significant practical value. The general organization of topics leads from well-established cross-coupling reactions, such as reviews of the Suzuki, Stille, and Heck reactions, to more recent variations including aryl amination and coupling reactions involving directed ortho-metallated reagents. This book could supplement advanced coursework in organometallics and organic synthesis. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. G. A.
