Kirkpatrick (College of William and Mary) presents a rigorous examination of the psychology of religion in the context of evolutionary psychology and attachment theory. In viewing religion as "a by-product of numerous evolved psychological mechanisms," the author draws from extensive classical and contemporary studies and presents his findings in a well-organized and engaging fashion. John Bowlby's attachment theory plays a major role in Kirkpatrick's discussion--as do various theorists in evolutionary psychology--so the book could serve as a companion volume to Bowlby's works. Including extensive and well-documented research findings, this book will be a captivating read for those interested in the psychology of religion. ^BSumming Up: Essential.
