An update of the 1980 edition, this annotated bibliography and guide to critical reception aims to "provide scholars ... with a significant representation of the present current scholarly work of Fitzgerald in several countries of Europe, Asia, and North America." Stanley (Queensborough Community College, CUNY) covers material published 1980-2000 for Britain, France, Italy, and Germany, four of the countries featured in the earlier edition. For the fifth country, Japan, she includes retrospective coverage to 1969, "the last year Japanese scholarship was available for annotation in the earlier volume." She broadens the book's scope to include Denmark, Romania, Russia/Ukraine, India, and Canada. Coverage dates for those countries vary, depending on when Fitzgerald was introduced there. The entry for each nation contains a general assessment of Fitzgerald's reputation there, a chronological listing of translations and editions, and an annotated secondary bibliography arranged alphabetically by author under five subheadings: Books; Full-Length Studies and Collections; Essays/Chapters/Notes/Conference Papers; Book Reviews/News Articles/Radio Programs; Dissertations; and Teacher/Student Guides and Editions. Annotations vary in length and tend to be descriptive rather than evaluative; Stanley's analysis is confined to introductory essays. This is a useful portrait of Fitzgerald's reputation in the countries covered. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Research-level collections in American literature. W. M. Gargan Brooklyn College, CUNY
