A well-written introduction to the study of acoustic, magnetic, and optic properties associated with the surfaces of solids and liquids. Experimental techniques used in such studies are presented throughout as a complement to the theoretical description of surface states and the phenomena they influence. One of the later chapters is devoted to layered structures and superlattices as a generalization of simple surface structures. For those graduate students and other researchers new to one or more facets of this field, each chapter ends with a series of illustrative problems. Figures are well done and references to the literature are extensive and current (up to 1988). The book is strongly recommended for those possessing the necessary preparation. -C. A. Hewett, Rochester Institute of Technology
