This guide and directory features over 600 centers in the Washington, DC, area that hold resources relevant to the study of Central Asia and the Caucasus. Broad in scope, it includes academic programs in colleges and universities, technical and humanitarian assistance organizations, and traditional sources of research materials, such as archives, libraries, and museums. It lists and briefly describes embassies of each country in the region. Some sections are of uncertain use to scholars; that on publications and media features a few publishers and periodicals that publish books and articles on Central Asia but do not have open archives or libraries. The editors obtained information for the guide by survey--organizations were identified and verified either in person, by visiting the group's Web site, or via e-mail or telephone. Each entry includes the name of the organization, address, phone and e-mail contact, and Web site address where available. Practical information includes hours of service, conditions of access, and photocopying fees. Library or manuscript holdings are described briefly. This guide will be most useful to scholars who are planning a research trip to the Library of Congress and might be interested in other resources in the immediate area. More detailed descriptions of richer repositories would improve future editions. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Graduate students; faculty. T. Miller Michigan State University
