Written by one of the pioneers of the field, this is a unique textbook that presents many topics from the broader area of microbial physiology. Forty chapters vary in length, with selected end-of-chapter references. As in a typical textbook, there are no citations within the text, and many concepts and details are stated without reference. It is not obvious how references were selected for this edition; these have little value to most readers. Overall, the work contains a large table of contents, a list of over 200 abbreviations in the front matter, and is well indexed with about 700 terms. While the typeset illustrations are excellent, at least a dozen figures seem to be low resolution screen shots of the electronic reader (Kindle) version, and some are quite illegible. Others mean little, as they are copied in black and white from color publications. The book has a sturdy binding and is generally well produced, yet there is too high a rate of typographical errors--one would hope for fewer in a fourth edition. The pricing of the work is expected in a monopoly market. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through researchers and faculty. --Lawrence C. Davis, Kansas State University
