This book is an anthology of testimonies given by Jewish survivors of the Holocaust in the Ukraine. Zabarko survived the Shargorod ghetto and was involved with a Yale University project that collected Jewish Holocaust experiences. While this volume contains detailed first-hand descriptions of atrocities, it also recounts numerous courageous, compassionate acts that enabled survivors to escape annihilation. The book thus offers a more nuanced view of the Holocaust experience than some collections. Because it is not organized in any systematic fashion, it provides an impressionistic view of the period, juxtaposing violence and slaughter with deeds both bold and humane. It also illuminates the situation of Jews in the Ukraine, a subject of vital importance that scholars have only been able to study fully since the fall of the Soviet regime. These eyewitness accounts will become even more valuable as the generation of survivors continues to shrink, and will make this book an important addition to any serious collection of Holocaust material. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
