Ten essays analyze important persistent questions on unemployment--why it is so high, why it varies among countries, why it fluctuates widely, why it varies among groups, and how it affects inflation. These are advanced essays, mainly for graduates, but many are accessible and rewarding to upper-level undergraduates. There is an excellent 80-page introductory overview chapter, a 24-page reference section, and a detailed, helpful 20-page subject index. Chapter annexes provide illustrations, elaborations, data sets, and situation analyses. Each chapter also has a set of discussion questions. The authors are experts in this field, and the book will be a major reference work for scholars and students. Highly recommended for graduate and upper-division undergraduate collections.
