In this excellent book, Paulson (Univ. of Puget Sound) thoroughly covers the shorebirds of North America, treating 94 species. An introduction deals with anatomy, plumage variation, molt, identification behavior, vocalizations, distribution conservation, and species accounts. Tables deal with accidental species, shorebird diversity, and estimated populations of many species. In the main part of the book, 534 photographs often depict breeding and non-breeding plumage as well as juvenile plumage. The written section about each species gives size, plumages, identification at rest and in flight, voice, behavior, habitat, and range. The photos are clear and precise. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. All libraries serving lower-level undergraduates and above, as well as general readers. C. J.
