Victorian prose writers after 1867 /

Designed as a sequel to Victorian Prose Writers before 1867 (1973), also ed. by Thesing, this volume analyzes nonfiction prose other than novels, emphasizing letters, journals, speeches, and essays from 1867 until 1901. Thirty writers are discussed, including five of major importance (Arnold, Morris, Pater, Wilde, and Darwin). This volume both complements and updates David J. DeLaura's Victorian Prose: A Guide to Research (1973), a standard work in Victorian studies. Each entry includes a checklist of prose followed by a critical essay analyzing the writer's contribution. Also included are a bibliography and a listing of the location of the writer's papers. Representative samples of Victorian prose and a selection of hard-to-find critical thought are included as an appendix.
