Readers will not find the great US 19th-century novelists in this volume. As the editor states, "The primary objective . . . is straightforward: to provide profiles of fiction writers of the nineteenth century who have not been treated previously in the series." All 47 writers are lesser known and have only recently received much attention from scholars. Representation is broad, from authors of popular fiction (Mary Jane Holmes) and regional novelists (Alice Cary) to more sophisticated writers (Frederick William Thomas). Ljungquist's introduction deftly identifies the role of these minor authors in the development of a national literature. Illustrations and reproductions of title pages add context to the critical essays. Recommended for public and academic libraries. M. Thomas Illinois Wesleyan University

From renowned poet Fujiwara No Shunzei (1114^-1204) to intrepid world traveler Christina Dodwell (1951^-), entries in these volumes help demonstrate the sweep of the DLB.
