Pousette-Dart, with Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and others, helped found the artistic movement that forever moved the hub of modern art from Paris cafe to Manhattan studio. Similar to the paintings of his New York School colleagues, Pousette-Dart's enigmatic work included the application of Jungian theory and automatism, as well as issues of duality, sexuality, and the play between positive and negative space. In the first comprehensive analysis of the evolution of Pousette-Dart's style and technique since his death, five respected art historians focus on the major themes and periods of his 60-year career. The youngest abstract expressionist's tendency to meditate on specific themes throughout his life in his painting, sculpture, and photography allow his oeuvre to be covered successfully by theme. This book could be considered an extension of Kuebler's earlier work (an exhibition catalog, with Robert Hobbs, Richard Pousette-Dart, CH, May'91, 28-4905), and it does much to firmly fix Pousette-Dart in the history of art with references to his influences, predecessors, contemporaries, and disciples. Illustrations included throughout as well as a substantial number of plates aid in demonstrating the authors' comments and Pousette-Dart's artistic choices. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
