Cuyjet (Univ. of Louisville) edits a volume that both presents issues facing African American male undergraduates and offers solutions for increasing their graduation rate. In chapter 1 he provides demographic data noting the low percentage of these students, the impact on black women, and the need to understand their diverse cultural values and behavior. Chapter 2 examines success factors, while chapter 3 emphasizes the importance of involvement in campus activities. Chapter 4 discusses the advantages of such students being leaders. Other topics include the effects of developmental mentoring, religion, the influence of fraternities, and involvement in intercollegiate athletics. The challenges faced by African American gay students are also noted. It is lamented that community colleges no longer prepare students to transfer successfully to four-year institutions. In the concluding chapter, Cuyjet summarizes the suggestions made. See also Luis B.
