This work is designed as a companion to Evolutionary Ecology, ed. by C. W. Fox, D. A. Roff, and D. J. Fairbairn (CH, May'02, 39-5184). Like that work, it introduces many important topics, this time in evolutionary genetics. The contributors are leading scientists in their research areas. Each chapter covers a different topic and follows roughly a similar format, giving the whole book a consistency that is unusual in a collection. The format incorporates an introduction, discussions of a series of concepts, a case study, suggestions for future reading, and sometimes suggestions for future study. The case study approach is well suited for the training of young scientists. Many works focus on one or a few areas of evolutionary genetics, but few recent books offer a broad treatment of the topic. R. S. Singh and C. B. Krimbas's edited work Evolutionary Genetics (2000) provides many more references than the work under review. A book listed as forthcoming at the time of this review, Population Genetics and Evolutionary Theory, by A. R. Templeton (2006), may provide similarly broad coverage of this topic. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
