In coverage of the discipline, historical depth, and international perspective this constitutes an exceptionally comprehensive survey of political science. The 41 contributors, 19 of whom including the coeditors are from outside the US, are recognized scholars. The book is composed of nine parts covering the major subfields in the discipline, each containing chapters that focus on specific perspectives. Each part also has an introductory overview chapter and a concluding chapter evaluating changes over the past two decades. Chapter bibliographies list the classic works in each area as well as important recent publications. The approach taken here is broader and oriented more toward institutional analysis than Political Science: The State of the Discipline II, ed. by Ada W. Finifter (1993), which relied on US scholars and has a single-chapter survey for each subfield of the discipline. Also very useful in A New Handbook are the introductory "bibliometric analysis" of where and how frequently scholars are cited in the ensuing essays and the detailed subject and name indexes. A definitive reference work in the field. R. Heineman; Alfred University
