Summary: | Slovakia has implemented a range of thorough energy reforms over a short period of time with impressive results. As a medium-sized new EU member state, it plays a strategic role in European natural gas supply. With limited domestic energy resources, Slovakia relies on imports for almost 80% of its net primary energy supply, mainly from Russia. Between 1990 and 2003, as a result of structural reforms and enery price increases, total primary energy supply decreased by 14 % and energy and carbon intensities fell by 30% and 43%, respectively. The energy reforms have now entered a crucial stage, simultaneously consolidating achievements, integrating EU energy markets and strengthening energy security. This publication looks at the reforms made so far and offers recommendations to face the challenges ahead
