Summary:In the Muotatal, a small valley of Central Switzerland, people perform a local variant of the Alpine song known since the 19th century as the "Yodel." In the Swiss-German dialect of the Muotatal, the songs of the traditional repertoire are called Juuz (pronounced "Yootz") or by its diminutive Jüüzli. Singing in this traditional way is called "Yootzing" and the singers are called "Yootzers." This film offers a detailed explanation of the techniques of vocal production and special harmonies used in Yootzing, and, through the use of computer graphics, illustrates the musical structure and dynamics of the songs. Yootzing is characterized by a rapid alteration of chest voice on the vowel sound "aa" and the head voice on the vowel sound "u". Various singers demonstrate different types of songs. Diatonic accordion playing, which is similar in musical structure to yootzing, is also demonstrated.
