This overwhelming volume serving as a catalog for a 2006 Malibu, CA, exhibition of the same title was many years in preparation. Many of the outstanding pots described and analyzed are on loan from major museums in Europe and Russia. The subject matter, first suggested by guest curator Cohen, along with several other leading scholars of Grecian pottery, is described in great detail in nine chapters. Athenian pottery and decoration of 6th-5th centuries BCE, not only black- and red-figure wares, but many other new special techniques--bilingual vases, coral red gloss, Six's technique, added clay and gilding, outline in black- and red-figure vase-painting, white ground, etc.--are all examined and described in great detail, using the many beautifully photographed pottery items on display. The contents include names of lenders to the exhibition; acknowledgments; maps; abbreviations; a glossary; catalog entries; an index of painters, potters, groups, and classes; abbreviations for references; and a very complete bibliography. ^BSumming Up: Essential.
